HUMIDIFIER SAFETY
PLEASE READ AND SAVE
THESE IMPORTANT SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS.
IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions
should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric
shock, and injury to persons, including the following:
1. Read all instructions before using the appliance.
2. To avoid fire or shock hazard, plug the appliance directly
into a 120V AC electrical outlet.
3. Keep the cord out of heavy traffic areas. To avoid fire hazard,
NEVER put the cord under rugs, near heat registers, radiator,
stoves, or heaters.
4. DO NOT place humidifier near heat sources such as stoves,
radiators, and heaters. Do locate your humidifier on an inside
wall near an electrical outlet. The humidifier should be at least
4" away from the wall for best results.
5. NEVER place humidifier in an area where it is accessible to children.
6. NEVER use humidifier in a closed room, particularly where a child
may be sleeping, resting, or playing (a closed room may result in
excessive humidity).
7. WARNING: Do not attempt to refill humidifier without first
unplugging the unit from its electrical outlet. Failure to heed
this warning may cause personal injury.
8. NEVER place anything over moisture outlet when unit is running.
9. NEVER drop or insert any object into any openings.
10. DO NOT operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug,
if the appliance malfunctions, or if it has been dropped or damaged
in any manner. Return appliance to manufacturer for examination,
electrical or mechanical adjustment, or repair.
11. Use appliance only for intended household use as described in this
manual. Any other use not recommended by the manufacturer may
cause fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. The use of attach
®
ments not recommended or sold by Bionaire may cause hazards.
12. DO NOT use outdoors.
13. Always place humidifier on a firm, flat, level surface (4” from wall).
A waterproof mat or pad is recommended for under the humidifier.
1
The length of cord used on this appliance was selected to reduce
the hazards of becoming tangled in, or tripping over a longer cord.
If a longer cord is necessary an approved extension cord may be used.
The electrical rating of the extension cord must be equal to or greater
than the rating of the humidifier. Care must be taken to arrange the
extension cord so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop
where it can be pulled on by children or accidentally tripped over.
HOW YOUR COOL MOISTURE HUMIDIFIER WORKS
®
Your Bionaire Cool Moisture humidifier draws dry air through the rear
air intake grill area. This air is then passed through a moisture–laden
wick filter which retains the minerals and deposits. The resulting moist
air is directed back into the room from the top air grill.
Tip: This humidification system provides a cool, invisible moisture
output. It is normal not to see the mist.

For BCM4509: To take advantage of the SmartTouch™ Electronic
Humidistat, press the MODE button until the speed is set in either
the HIGH or LOW setting, and the Desired Humidity is set. When
the humidity level rises above the set humidity, the humidifier will stop.
When the humidity level drops below the set humidity, the humidifier
will turn on automatically.
NOTE: When the SmartTouch™ Electronic Humidistat is set, either
the HIGH or LOW power light and the percent humidity light will remain
lit during operation. The SmartTouch™ Humidifier has memory. This
means that when you turn the unit back on, it will be at the last setting
the humidifier was set at.
For BCM4510: The auto setting is designed to operate between
30% and 65% relative humidity range. (The recommended setting
is 40-45%.) The auto setting may be used with any of the three
auto speed settings (High, Medium or Low).
To program a specific humidity level in the auto setting, follow these
instructions.
1. Use the mode button to scroll to either Auto/High, Auto/Medium,
or Auto/Low.
4
2. Set the humidifier to the desired room humidity level by pressing the
(+) or (–) buttons, in increments of 5%. If you scroll past the maximum
setting of 65%, the display will automatically loop back to 30%.
3. Now the desired room humidity level is set.
NOTE: When the humidity in the room is less than the level you have
programmed, the humidifier will continue to produce moisture. Once the
room humidity level has been achieved, the humidifier will turn off. When
the room humidity drops below your set level, the unit will automatically
begin producing moisture again.
Depending on the size of your room and your personal comfort,
you will set your humidistat at different levels. If condensation forms
on your windows or walls, or your measured room humidity is above
50%, then turn off your humidifier, or lower your humidistat level.
(Humidity can be measured by the use of a hygrometer, such as
☛
®
Bionaire BT254 or BT400 Digital humidity and temperature monitor.
NOTE: Allow up to 30 minutes for the filter to fully absorb water
and for the unit to produce moisture.
If you do not plan to use the humidifier for two or more days, make
sure any residual water is drained from the water tank, base and wick
filter to prevent algae or bacteria growth.
NIGHTLIGHT INSTRUCTIONS (For BCM4510 Only)
the BCM4510 is equipped with a nightlight which illuminates the control
panel screen in a dark room setting. This nightlight operates on a sensor,
and will illuminate when the room becomes dark. When the room
becomes light, the nightlight feature will automatically turn off. To inacti-
vate the nightlight, simply press the nightlight button on the control
panel. To re-activate the nightlight feature, simply press the light button
again (to see if light is on, place finger over sensor).
REFILLING THE WATER RESERVOIR
When the water reservoir runs out of water, the refill light will illuminate
on the control panel. The fan will continue to run to help dry out the
humidifier. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, and follow
steps under "Filling the Water Reservoir."
If you do not plan to use the humidifier for two or more days, make
sure any residual water is drained from the water reservoir, base
and wick filter to prevent algae or bacteria growth.
REPLACING THE WICK FILTER
Through normal use, waterborne minerals and sediment become
trapped in the wick filter. The harder your water, the greater the amount
of minerals in the water, and the more often you will need to change your
5
wick filter. Filter Monitor (after replacing the wick section) you will be
able to check the life of the filter on your humidifier by checking the
Filter Monitor located on the moisture outlet. When the unit is not in
operation, the Filter Monitor (BCM4505/4509) will also read as OFF.
When the unit is turned on, the Filter Monitor needle will need 60
minutes to read the current filter condition. If the needle reads change
after 60 minutes, then filter replacement is needed. Regular filter
replacement is necessary to ensure optimal humidifier performance.
To replace the wick filter, follow the steps below.
1. Turn the mode knob off and unplug the humidifier from
the electrical outlet.
2. Remove the water reservoir and humidifier housing to access
the base tray.
3. Discard the old wick filter and insert a new wick filter into
the filter brackets found in the base.
4. Replace the humidifier housing and then the water reservoir.
5. Repeat “Operating Instructions” steps listed within.
It will take about 30 minutes for the humidifier to reach maximum
output.
You can obtain your filter model by calling 1-800-253-2764 in North
America or by visiting your nearest retailer or authorized service center.
